Winterveldt youth are not just concerned about the crime happening around them but are lending a helping hand to combat it.
The Winterveldt youth crime prevention desk and the Dube police jointly visits schools for motivational talks to educate children about criminal activities they need to be aware of.
They are collaborating to fight crime and have also addressed bullying in schools and spread knowledge of safety.
Social crime prevention co-ordinator Sergeant Thembi Nowathe at the Dube police station in Winterveldt said they worked closely with schools and having the team of youth next to her made it very easy.

She said recently the team visited the Holy Trinity Secondary School to give a talk about types bullying.
“Psychologists are always on standby to help bullied children.”
Youth crime prevention desk chairperson Obed Khoza said: “Our vision is to encourage the principle of co-operation between young people working together combating crime.
“Who and what are required to join our desk are persons over the age of 18 up to 35 with a grade 12 certificate and no criminal record. We encourage children to go to school and also to help the ones who have already passed matric to ensure that education grows in them. I always say with education you can go anywhere.”
He said the challenges they were facing were the lack of resources and finance.
“We need funds, that is why some of our members left the organisation because they lacked the motivation. A stipend is really needed. We are establishing a co-operative, which will help with recycling, cleaning, extra school support programmes and youth development programmes. We need proper resources to function efficiently and productively,” he said.
