Swift reaction by local security companies and police led to the arrest of two suspected business robbers in Elardus Park on Friday morning.
Five robbers had gained entry into a liquor store at around 04:00, according to Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.
The alarm was triggered and members of Bull Security arrived at the scene.
Police and other security companies were notified and made their way to the scene to assist.
“Shots were exchanged between the robbers and authorities,” said Miller.
“The suspects fled in two vehicles. During the shootout, the tyres of one of the vehicles, a Mazda 6, were damaged.”
The vehicle crashed into a nearby Piering Street property and the robbers tried to flee on foot.
“Authorities succeeded in apprehending two of the men,” said Miller.
The remaining three robbers in the second vehicle managed to escape.
“The two arrested men were found to be in possession of stolen property and business robbing tools.”
Police are investigating the possibility of linking those arrested to other similar crimes in the area.
Miller thanked Bull Security and all the security companies who, together with the police, worked to apprehend those responsible.
“We would like to thank the various security personnel for putting their lives on the line to secure the arrest.”
