A special police task team has arrested a person allegedly linked to the armed robbery of international students in Mamelodi East earlier this week.
The 18 students were robbed by five men on their way to the school on Monday.
They had been on an outreach visit to the Viva Foundation School in Lusaka, Mamelodi East, together with their professors.
A bystander was shot and injured while a faculty member was assaulted.
The five men fled the scene in a Toyota Quantum minibus.
The following day, an investigation led the police to a carwash in Phase 3, Mamelodi East, where a Quantum matching the description of the one used during the robbery was found.
Inside the vehicle police found evidence allegedly linking a 30-year-old man to the crime.
The man was arrested on Thursday evening at the Pienaarspoort informal settlement.
He would appear in the Pretoria magistrate court on Monday to face charges of business robbery, attempted murder and assault.
A statement by police said officers were “hot on the heels” of the remaining robbers.
“It is only a matter of time before they are arrested,” said provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela.
Mawela warned criminals that police “mean business”.
“[Criminals] cannot terrorise our communities, children and visitors to our country,” he said.
“We will not rest until serious and violent crime is a thing of the past.”
