A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years for stabbing and attempting to rob a student.
Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said last August, an 18-year-old female student and a friend were on their way to a college in Newlands.
“Two unknown men approached them and demanded their personal belongings. The students refused and a scuffle ensued.”
She said the 18-year-old student bit the hand of one of the suspects.
“In return he stabbed her with a knife and she sustained a cut to her hand.”
The attackers only fled when a passerby stopped to help the students.
A private security company, CSI later arrested one of the suspects.

Weilbach said the suspect’s hand was still bleeding from the bite.
John Malesela (41) appeared in the Pretoria regional court on a charge of attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances and was subsequently sentenced to eight years behind bars on 2 May.
Warrant Officer Christo Jooste from Brooklyn SAPS was the investigating officer on the case.
Brooklyn SAPS station commander Brigadier Kushie Nair lauded Jooste for his dedication and efficiency.
“His commitment ensured that justice was served.”
She also commended him for the way he supported the student throughout the investigation and during the court procedure.
Nair said students were advised to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings and not to use cellphones in public.
