After a string of crimes in their area, residents of Soshanguve block VV have established their own community policing forum.
Forum leader Senzo Chipa said a WhatsApp group had been set up so residents could alert a team of 40 members about suspicious activities in their area.
“We divided ourselves into several groups so that we could be effective all the time. I am glad we get along as we are working towards a common goal,” said Chipa.
He said the CPF was established after residents had experienced many car hijackings and house break-ins.

Patroller Colman Makgobokoane said that since the CPF was started in April 2016, reports of crime have dropped.
“So far I see a lot of progress, because we are doing it out of passion. I never thought we would have such an impact. Crime is dropping by the day and that gives us the spirit to keep moving and never give up,” said Makgobokoane.
The owner of a local convenience store Shahab Uddin said he was grateful for how the CPF members did not discriminate.
“I really appreciate the work done by the CPF and I am thankful that they do not discriminate against us,” said Uddin.
“This forum has helped us a lot. When I suspect something fishy near my shop, I immediately notify the members on the WhatsApp group.”
Resident Malope Phasha commend the work of the CPF members.
“I hope the whole community will feel safe when they are at work or school because we trust our patrolling groups. We can now go on vacation with our families peacefully, without worrying about break-ins.”
