UPDATE: North ‘panga assault’ man granted bail

Wesley Roux was recently arrested on new charges of assault, theft and intimidation when he was at the court to appear on a separate charge of attempted murder for allegedly assaulting an unidentified man with a panga during an argument earlier this year.

Panga assault accused Wesley Roux has been granted bail by the Pretoria North Magistrate’s court.

The 28-year-old appeared briefly in court on Monday but had his case postponed to Tuesday so the court could get his docket and for a formal bail application.

When he appeared on Wednesday, an application was made for forfeiture of bail.

“The application to cancel his bail was not granted,” the state prosecutor told Rekord.

“We proceeded until 13:00 on Tuesday afternoon, but the case was postponed to Wednesday morning as I was not feeling well,” he said.

“I am actually on sick leave but I had to be in court as I am the applicant in the cancellation of his bail.”

Roux was recently arrested on new charges of assault, theft and intimidation when he was at the court to appear on a separate charge of attempted murder for allegedly assaulting an unidentified man with a panga during an argument earlier this year.

Sinoville police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the more recent charges were lodged after Roux allegedly punched workers at a restaurant when they reportedly attempted to stop him from stealing a chicken.

Van Dyk said Roux was allegedly involved in yet another assault at a Tops@Spar bottle store later on the day.

The video, which Rekord has seen, shows a man, thought to be Roux, arguing with a cashier then assaulting a security guard at the bottle store.

Spar group legal adviser Gordon Pentecost said video footage of the incident has been handed to the police.
