East police trace alleged kidnapper to Krugerdorp

“The suspect was traced to a house by the police after he had abducted the girl and demanded a ransom of R350 after the child went missing on Saturday.”

Mamelodi east police have arrested a 32-year-old suspect in connection with the kidnapping of a young girl, aged 11.

The suspect was arrested during a joint police operation between a task team and the family violence and child protection unit in Krugersdorp on Tuesday, according to police spokesperson Sergeant Mabel Sibanda.

“The suspect was traced to a house by the police after he had abducted the girl and demanded a ransom of R350 after the child went missing on Saturday.”

He was threatening that the mother would not get her child unless she paid the money.

Sibanda said the suspect was from Mamelodi and known to the mother, “but they are not related”.

“The man is known in the community as a prophet,” said Sibanda.

The mother of the child reported her missing on Saturday night after realising she was nowhere to be found and it was getting late.

Sibanda said the child was found with no physical harm, but further medical assessment would be done.

It was not yet known how the suspect kidnapped the girl.

Joint police work led officers to Krugersdorp where the suspect was arrested.

The man was expected to soon appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on charges of kidnapping.
