Police have noted reports of pedestrians knocking on motorists’ vehicles to draw their attention at intersections.
Lyttelton police are patrolling intersections on a regular basis, according to police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller, who confirmed however that there had been no reports of smash-and-grab incidents linked to this practice.
“The pedestrians tend to be jobseekers standing at the intersections,” he said.
“They do tend to become assertive towards motorists, especially female motorists.”
Miller suggests adhering to the various smash-and-grab safety tips.
These include always making sure you are aware of your immediate surroundings.
“If you do feel threatened but your life is not in imminent danger try to get a description of the suspect,” said Miller.
“This includes his weight, height and a description of his clothing.
“Report this to your nearest police station and police will investigate.”
Miller said the Lyttelton police task team was clamping down on motor vehicle and theft-out-of-motor-vehicle crimes in the area.
Last week police arrested a man on the corner of Rabie and Sullivan streets.
The Lyttelton police tracing team was patrolling the area when they spotted a black Audi 1 with a silver roof.
The driver was found to be in possession of a device used for remote jamming as well as suspected stolen property.
