UPDATE: Lake plans still in pipeline – mayor
“We will soon start with a public participation process which will help us finalise the plans.”
Plans to revamp the Centurion Lake have yet to kick off.
“The plans depend on a public participation process which is in the pipeline,” said Tshwane mayor Stevens Mokgalapa.
“The metro’s department of regional operations and coordination is currently only carrying out routine maintenance.”
“We will soon start with the public participation process, which will help us finalise the plans.
“This process will be driven by the local ward councillor, Mr Peter Sutton.”
During his maiden budget speech in May, Mokgalapa announced that R28.6-million had been allocated for the lake’s maintenance.

The polluted lake became a problem for residents and business owners in the area with many complaining of bad smells.
Mokgalapa, who visited the lake recently, described the area as “dirty and smelly”.
“The nearby hotel attracts visitors from around the world,” he said.
“That is why we need to do something about the lake quickly.
“I did not like what I saw at the lake and this is why I called for the budget allocation to solve the problems there.”
Mokgalapa said the proposed urban park would depend on the outcome of the public participation meetings.
It was previously proposed the lake’s bottom be raised and be turned into a naturally flowing part of the nearby Hennops River.
This was part of a seven-point strategy to rehabilitate the river.
A bird sanctuary was also in the works.
Mokgalapa said he had instructed the metro’s regional operations and coordination as well as environmental departments to compile a project proposal, which would be completed soon.
“We can start now that the money has been allocated, once the plans are finalised.”
