In line with the spirit of this year’s 67 minutes for Mandela, Mamelodi West residents ran a soup kitchen at the local clinic.
Under the leadership of Ward 6 councillor Jabu Masilela, the residents woke up early to start preparing soup for residents of Mamelodi who were going to the clinic in the freezing cold.
Masilela said he was shocked to find out that the people were waking up as early 03:00 just to stand in a long queue for healthcare at the clinic.

Accompanied by locals, the residents served the more than 200 people in the queue warm soup and bread in the morning.
Masilelea said he wished he had arrived earlier to keep them company, but said he hopes the soup and bread made difference.
He said he hoped ploughing back into the community would not end on Mandela Day but would be practised every day.

The residents then went to J Kekana Secondary School to clean the school premises and classrooms “for learners to study in a healthy and clean environment”.
