Pretoria West police inform people on safety
The safety drive took place at the Quagga centre and was handled by the police’s social crime prevention team last Friday.
The Pretoria West police recently created some awareness over some crime trends in the area.
This was done last Friday at the Quagga centre by the police’s social crime prevention team, said police spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma.
“The shoppers were issued with different types of pamphlets in regards to common assaults, theft of and out of motor vehicles, rights of elderly persons, house break-ins and theft safety tips,” she said.

“Women were also provided with information regarding domestic violence and procedures a victim should follow.”
She said house break-ins and theft were an issue in the area.
“Every day several houses are broken into,” she said.
She said that residents should always ensure that all doors and windows were properly locked when leaving the house or going to sleep.
“Outside doors are often made of non-solid material and bad quality locks which make it easy for them to be kicked open,” she said.
According to police, many criminals enter a house through patio doors.
“Extra locks will ensure that the patio doors cannot be lifted out of their rails,” she said.
“Garage doors and other doors leading to the house should never be left unlocked and locks should always be replaced when moving into a new house.”

Vuma said the theft of, from and out of motor vehicles were also of concern.
She said these types of thefts were increasing all the time.
“The Hercules police want to ensure that you, as car owner [do] not become another statistic of crime,” she said.
She advised residents to note the identification marks for their vehicle, for example, damage, broken windows or stickers.
Vuma said locals responded well to the initiative.
“The response was very positive and people appreciated our visibility in the area,” she said.
“Some even stopped by our stand to hear us out and to give them the information.”
She urged residents to make use of the safety tips.
“Always stay vigilant against crime,” she said.
“In times of an emergency or when witnessing a crime, please report it to your nearest police station.”
