Info needed to solve north accident case

Gerrit Smiley Joubert, the President of the Phoenix motorcycle club said Smith was a man who one could always rely on.

Friends and family of Johan Smith have appealed for information that could assist the police investigation into his death.

Smith and his wife were riding their Kawasaki Z1000 motorcycle along the Es’Kia Mphalehle Drive in Mayville, opposite Joos Bekker Caravan Park in the north on Sunday 14 July at around 20:00 when he was killed in a serious accident.

His wife is in a critical condition in hospital.

“Although he worked overseas, he was still very committed to the club. He also had a very open heart,” Joubert said.

Smith who worked as an aircraft maintenance engineer overseas was due to return to work on 19 July. He was the vice president of the motorcycle club.

“We saw him earlier that day at the Bombshelter Birthday Bash and Bible run and greeted them when they came to a coffee shop,” Joubert said.

Smith’s wife, Charmaine was taken to hospital with multiple injuries.

“Please keep Charmaine, the kids and the family and friends in your prayers in this challenging time. A personal thank you to everyone that assisted at the scene (especially Neels Dreyer from SOC and CMA) as well as all the bikers that stopped to offer their assistance. Thank you to all the clubs and individuals for your messages and support – proud to be part of the biker brotherhood. May you rest in peace Johan – You will always be remembered. Smiley – President Phoenix MC,” Joubert wrote on his Facebook page.

Smith will be laid to rest on 24 July NG Booysen church.

His twin brother, who emigrated to New Zealand, fly to be with the family.

Smith is survived by his wife and two children aged nine and three-years-old.

Constable Mandlakayise Zwane has confirmed the motorcycle accident.

“We are investigating a culpable homicide case,” Zwane said.
