UPDATE: Well-known Centurion surgeon and father killed in accident

Dr Ashraf Mohamed and his father, Hafez Mohamed, were declared dead on the scene after a multi-vehicle accident in Sunderland Ridge.

A well-known maxillofacial and oral surgeon from Pretoria and his father were killed in a multi-vehicle accident on the corner of Wierda Road and the R55 in Sunderland Ridge on Friday afternoon.

The news was confirmed by his office assistant.

Dr Ashraf Mohamed and his father, Hafez Mohamed, were declared dead on the scene while two children, believed to be those of the surgeon, were also injured in the accident.

The 15-year-old girl suffered serious injuries and was treated on the scene before being transported to a private hospital for further care.

The 13-year-old boy suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to a private hospital.

Two light vehicles and a truck were involved in the accident.

In a statement, ER24 spokesperson Ross Campbell said it was suspected that the truck rear-ended the two light motor vehicles.

Dr Mohamed was known for a medical procedure in which he re-attached a 12-year-old boy’s jaw after a quad-bike accident in 2005.

The procedure was said to be the first of its kind in the world.

Dr Mohamed was a maxillofacial and oral surgeon at the Unitas Hospital and lived in Laudium.
