Beloved north homeless man dies

"He died at his usual spot with people he stayed with on the street."

A homeless man, who made news headlines after he survived a brutal attack on the streets of Pretoria North, died at the weekend.

Eben Otto, also called Dolf, died of apparent natural causes at his “usual spot”, according to Ruth Jacobz, founder of a group which provides food to the homeless.

“He died with people he lived with on the street,” she said.

Otto – whose “spot” was along President Steyn Street – made headlines in 2017 when he was found in a pool of blood after an assault with an apparent sharp object.

News of his passing spread on social media after people were asked to help raise funds for his funeral.

Jacobz said a local funeral home offered to bury him for free.

Jacobs added it was not the first time the funeral home had offered to help with the burial of one of the homeless people in the area.

Otto was believed not to have had a wife or children.

Meanwhile, social media users also took time to post their messages of condolences on Facebook.

Tributes came streaming in on social media upon the announcement of Dolf’s passing.
