West soup project feeds hundreds

More than 600 people received soup this past weekend.

More than 600 people received soup this past weekend, thanks to a unique project recently launched in the west of Pretoria.

The limousine project, which took place two weeks ago in Elandspoort, collected funds from people to win a trip on a limousine to Hartebeespoort.

Soup could be provided thanks to the money collected, said a member of the not-for-profit organisation, XseBlixem, Frik de Bruin.

The soup day took place last Saturday.

“This soup, was made by different soup mothers in the area and distributed on Saturday, he said.

Soup was taken to Danville, Proclamation Hill, Pretoria and Wolmer.

The day was a huge success, De Bruin said.

“Helpers dished out soup from day to night and only finished at about 22:00.

Several interested parties in the area were involved in the project.

One of them was Alet Stroebel of Danville, who also has her own soup kitchen.

Stroebel helped distribute about 420 bowls of soup in Danville.

“I made more than was needed,” she said.

She added that the day was a wonderful experience.

“It felt good to give back to the community again,” she said.

“My helpers also enjoyed it enormously.”

With the soup Stroebel also provided 500 bread rolls.

Wanda Schuurmann of the CPR handed out soup in Proclamation Hill.

“We enjoyed the day very much and it felt very good to help,” she said.

“One does not only hand out soup but talks to the people as well.”

Schuurmann said she was not sure how much soup they handed out but they cooked three huge pots full for the day.

AfriForum’s Pretoria West neighbourhood watch was also involved in the day.

They handed out soup in Danville, Proclamation Hill, and Pretoria West, said chairman Francois Oberholster.

“We handed out about 140 bowls of soup,” he said.

“It was so good to see that there are still people who care.”

About 34 bowls of soup were handed out at the Wolmer old age home, said Marleen Vermaak.

“We enjoyed the day very much,” she said.

De Bruin said pictures were taken during the project.

“We received a donation from Avon recently,” he said.

“Then we decided to announce two winners who took the pictures.”
