Man sentenced to 30 years for Centurion domestic worker’s rape

Tau Daniel Mothapo was convicted and sentenced to an effective 30 years' imprisonment for rape and house robbery.

The North Gauteng High Court has sentenced a 28-year-old man to 30 years’ imprisonment for the rape of a domestic worker in The Reeds.

Tau Daniel Mothapo was convicted and sentenced to an effective 30 years’ imprisonment for rape and house robbery last week Thursday, according to Wierdabrug police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma.

Mothapo was convicted of attacking the domestic worker with a knife and forcing her into the house where she was working.

“He then raped her and stole various household goods including a firearm,” said Huma.

The rape happened in June last year.

“The investigating officer Sergeant Samuel Molekoa started to establish Mothapo’s identity and ended up positively linking him with the case.”

Molekoa faced several challenges throughout the investigation and had to work closely with Interpol as the victim was from Lesotho.

“He was able to positively identify and arrest Mothap in Hammanskraal on 13 February 2019,” Huma said.

“Mothapo was also denied bail by the courts as Molekoa discovered he had violated a previous parole condition.”

Station commissioner Colonel Samuel Makama welcomed the sentencing and applauded Molekoa for his dedication and hard work.

“His creativity and sterling investigation and detection led to the accused finally being convicted and sentenced,” Makama said.

“This will definitely bring back confidence and trust within the community for Wierdabrug police.”
