Moot unhappy over dumped medical waste

Moot residents are up in arms following the discovery of medical waste dumped in Killick Avenue, Mayville, on Saturday.

Moot residents are up in arms following the discovery of medical waste dumped in Killick Avenue, Mayville, on Saturday.

Pretoria Moot CPF chairperson Elsabe van Staden said the waste was mostly hypodermic needles.

“Not only is the dumping of medical waste very unprofessional, but it also poses a danger to other people,” she said.

“A good example of the danger that this dumped medical waste pose was that one of my patrollers was pricked on the finger by a needle.”

“As a result of this, he had to seek medical attention at his own expenses,” she said.

She said he received an injection for foot and mouth disease, adding that he still had to undergo further medical treatment.

“It is really unacceptable that professionals dump their medical waste when there are correct procedures to follow,” she said.

“Being a professional, they should know what dangers medical waste posed to others.”

Van Staden said the needles were currently in her possession.

“I have one of those bins where medical waste can be kept in,” she said.

“It will remain here until we can take it to a hospital or emergency service so that they can discard it in a professional way.”

Van Staden urged those responsible to come forward.

Local ward councillor Elmarie Linde said she was not aware of the waste when Rekord contacted her.

“When illegal waste is dumped, the metro and police need to be informed,” she said.

“This will ensure that the guilty are fined, and the case is investigated.”

Linde said illegal dumping remained an issue in the Moot.

“Which is why I urge all residents to immediately report illegal dumping when they see it,” she said.

“If possible, a picture should also be taken of the illegal dumpers and once the metro is notified of the incident, they can respond and issue the necessary fines.”

She said there was another illegal dumping incident in the area at the weekend.

“A bakkie load of rotten meat was dumped at Trim Park,” she said.

“This deliberate act against the law needs to be stopped.”

Linde said it was important to work together to put a stop to illegal dumping.

“We need to stand together against these irresponsible people who litter in our residential area. It is unacceptable and something needs to be done,” she said.
