UPDATE: North community reaches out to Moloto Road accident victims
The grandmother is recovering in hospital, unaware of her grandchild's death.
The residents of Roodeplaat and Kameeldrift opened their hearts and wallets to help a family who lost a loved one in a horrific accident this week.
Carli Venter, a councillor and treasurer at the Kameeldrift Trauma Centre, said the centre had made its bank account available to the family to raise funds to pay for the funeral.
“From 20:00 last night until this morning, we received R12 000 [in] donations,” Venter told Rekord.

Venter said a donor has also offered to cover the funeral costs, while Phumalani Coffins has donated a coffin and Afri-Forum has committed to donate R10 000 to the family.
She said the Doxa Deo church in Kameeldrift also offered to host the funeral and supply refreshments.
“Thank you to each and every open hand, wallet and heart.”
On Wednesday afternoon, emergency services responded to an accident on the R573 road.
A Putco bus and an Uno were involved in a collision, leaving a teenage girl dead.

Hazel Nienaber (55) and her grandchildren, Abbigail (16) and Rochelle (14) were on their way home from school.
Rochelle was declared dead on the scene, while the other two suffered serious injuries and were transported to different hospitals.
Hazel is currently recovering in the Steve Biko Hospital and will undergo an MRI scan to determine the extent of her head injuries. She is still unaware that her youngest granddaughter is dead.
Abbigail is in an induced coma in the ICU at the Johannesburg General Hospital.
Hazel, her husband and their two grandchildren live in an informal settlement in the area.
