UPDATE: West toddler under sedation after burn accident

Logan Barnard (5) sustained serious burn wounds to his body over the weekend.

It was “not going well” with a five-year-old boy who was badly injured in a braai accident at his Mountain View home over the weekend, his mother said.

“One of his lungs has collapsed,” said Chanie Barnard of her son Logan, a grade RR learner from Laerskool Saamspan.

“Because of this, doctors could not take him to the operating theatre yet.”

His body was also swollen, said Barnard.

“The best they can do at the moment is to keep him under sedation to treat his wounds.”

Barnard said the accident happened at their home in the afternoon while they were getting ready for their customary Saturday braai.

She said she was busy reading a book next to their swimming pool, while her husband, Chris, was also busy at the outside table.

Their 12-year-old daughter, Mira, was busy playing with the dogs.

Logan was playing with wooden blocks when Barnard suddenly felt an “extreme heat” behind her back and heard Logan screaming.

“When I turned around, I saw Logan was on fire.”

It is unclear at this stage how the fire started.

Logan’s parents immediately rushed him into the swimming pool in a desperate attempt to douse the fire.

After that, they rushed him to the Eugene Marais hospital.

Logan was stabilised at the hospital before being transported to Garden City hospital in Johannesburg by helicopter.

He suffered serious burns to his face as well as a big part of his right arm and hand. There were also burn marks on his other arm and leg.

Barnard said while the situation remained difficult for the entire family, they have a good support network. The family also thanked the community for their concern and support.
