UPDATE: ‘Death road’ crash teen discharged

Teen discharged from hospital a week after accident that claimed sister's life.

The teenage girl, who survived an accident on the infamous Moloto R573 “death road” last week, has been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home.

Abbigail (16) le Roux and her sister Rochelle (14) were travelling with their grandmother Hazel Nienaber (55) on the afternoon of 14 August when an accident left their vehicle trapped under a commuter bus.

Abbigail and her grandmother both sustained serious injuries in the accident while her sister, who was sitting in the back of the vehicle, was declared dead on the scene.

Abbigail was airlifted to Johannesburg General Hospital in a critical condition.

“She was discharged yesterday and is doing really well,” said Kameeldrift Trauma Center spokesperson Carli Venter.

“She is, however, heartbroken about the passing of her sister.”

“Abbigail is a very quiet, but beautiful girl. We will make sure she gets the necessary counselling”.

Her grandmother, who was transported to Steve Biko Academic hospital in a serious condition, is still in the hospital.

She is expected to be discharged over the weekend.

After the accident, the Kameeldrift and Roodeplaat community took hands with the Kameeldrift crisis centre to raise funds for the family.

Venter said the funds will go towards supporting the family with everyday expenses such as petrol and groceries as well as possibly buying a new car.

“Thank you to everyone who opened their hearts and wallets to help this family.”

Funeral arrangements for Rochelle have been confirmed for next week Friday.
