Street robberies on the increase in Centurion

Lyttelton police have urged the public to be aware of street robberies which were on the increase.

Lyttelton police have urged the public to be aware of street robberies which were on the increase.

Police spokesman Captain Dave Miller said armed robberies have shown a resurgence of late.

“In this latest trend, the perpetrators, usually two in number, follow the victim for some distance until they pounce. They usually spread out and if the victim resists, two or three other robbers will appear as a backup,” he said.

Miller said most of these robberies happened during the day and items such as cellphones, wallets, laptops and watches were taken.

Miller has also warned motorists to be vigilant when parking their cars.

“We have said this a lot, but motorist should never leave their valuables inside the car. Criminals roam everywhere, you never know who you park your car next to or who’s looking, always be on a lookout and make sure nothing is visible in your car,” he said.

Miller urged community members to join the neighbourhood watch and CPF groups.

“These community groups are important because they keep everyone informed on what’s happening in the area.”
