North petition calls for improved policing

The DA has launched a petition in Hammanskraal West requesting that visible policing be implemented.

The DA has launched a petition in Hammanskraal West requesting that visible policing be implemented, by-laws be enforced, and that a clear commitment to reducing crime in the area was made through actions and not just words.

The petition was launched by DA constituency head in Hammanskraal Michael Shackleton MPL, alongside DA councillors Sylvester Phokoje, Kenneth Nkosi and Obed Moreriane on Friday.

The launch came a day after the latest annual crime statistics by the police showed an increase in crime in Gauteng.

“There is no visible policing in Hammanskraal. Illegal taverns abound and serious crimes are committed with zero accountability,” Shackleton said adding that laws should be enforced not only through word but actions as well.

“In Hammanskraal West you find illegal taverns, you find music being played all night with people not being able to sleep or study.”

He said Hammanskraal West remained rural while the eastern parts were better developed.

“In the west, some wards have never had running water, refuse removal… it is really the area that people live in a desperate situation and the people there really need help and visible policing is the first step to make sure there is accountability for the crime.”

Shackleton said the petition was about finding solutions and joining hands to beat crime.

“Working with the police to find solutions where we can all work together for the interest all the residents of Hammanskraal is what we are hoping for.”
