School holiday programme for east learners

Mamelodi learners will be kept busy during the school holidays.

Mamelodi learners will be kept busy and off the streets during the school holidays.

This comes after the Thandanani Drop Inn Centre teamed up with the Lompec Education Centre for the school holidays, expected to start on Friday 20 September to 2 October.

Thabo Kgotsi from Thandanani said they had come up with a prevention programme for Gender-based violence.

“The aim of the programme is to keep children busy and off the street during the school holidays,” said Kgotsi.

They were expecting to look after more than 300 children during the school holidays, working with parents.

“We decided to come up with this programme especially for children of Ward 23 because in the past we had lots of cases in which children went missing without a trace during the school holidays.

“The programme is aimed at looking after the children and feeding them for free while their parents are still at work.”

Parents are also expected to sign children in on a registration form in the morning and in the afternoon when they fetch them.

The children will be fed and kept busy the whole day with indigenous games, game boards, swimming and playing cheers.

Lompec Education Centre will be helping the children with their school work as well as giving computer lessons.

To ensure the safety of children at all times the Mamelodi East community policing forum will be on board to monitor the situation.

Kgotsi added that care givers from Thandanani and unemployed parents will be looking after the children.

There will be trips for children to visit heritage sites, museums and the botanical gardens.
