Water restrictions to large parts of Tshwane

Large parts of Pretoria may experience water restrictions due to power interruptions.
Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said Rand Water had restricted water supply to various areas within the city by 30 percent.
He said the limit imposed was due to an “unforeseen interruption of electricity supply” to the water utility’s two critical pump stations impacted on by a veld fire, within the week Mashigo said.
“This unfortunate incident resulted in the shutdown of power supply from Eskom’s Snowden sub-station to both of Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch plant and Lethabo pumping stations.”
This has left both Rand Water’s main treatment plants unable to pump any water.
Mashigo said the fire impacting the pump stations was extinguished and Eskom managed to restore power supply to the substation.
“However, the utility’s inability to pump water has affected a number of the city’s reservoir water levels.
“The situation is being exacerbated by the increased water demand due to high temperatures we are currently experiencing,” he said.
The city has urged consumers to be prudent when using water in order to ensure that the affected reservoirs recovered their optimal capacity.

“Consumers are advised not to water gardens, wash cars, fill swimming pools, until the flow of water has normalised.
“In the event that this call is not heeded, further restrictions will be imposed in order to remedy the situation,” Mashigo said.
