VIDEO: Police, MECs in surprise school raids

Dagga, knives and cigarettes were confiscated when police, accompanied by two Gauteng MECs, raided various schools in Hammanskraal on Wednesday.

Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko and Gauteng MEC for Social Dvelopment Thuliswa Nkabinde Khawe took part in the raids, which were part of their departments’ Take Charge campaign.

Mazibuko said her department had received complaints from the Hammanskraal community about drug problems and lawlessness in the area.

“Some of these problems overflow to schools,” said Mazibuko.

The campaign focused on gender-based violence, visits to identified crime hotspots, sports against crime, law enforcement operations, road safety and unannounced school visits.

Stop-and-searches were held along with road blocks and school raids.

A public meeting was also held at Themba sport centre to discuss the problems that community members are facing.

During one school raid, a 17-year-old Grade 9 learner, who was wanted for housebreaking, was arrested.

Its is alleged that the learner is a repeat offender and he had been wanted by the police for breaking into Tshwaraganang Children’s Live Home in Hammanskraal earlier this year.

“We found a lot of illegal things on the learners; some of them also threw such items out the window.”

“The challenges are huge in these schools; a lot of socials ills, including bullying of teachers. You can see that teachers are helpless and they no longer know what to do,” said Mazibuko.
