CBC robotics team takes gold at rAge Expo 2019

City school will represent SA at the World Robot Olympiad in Hungary

Local school Christian Brothers College (CBC) won two medals at the World Robotics Olympiad competition last Saturday at the rAge Gaming Expo, held at Ticket Pro Dome, Johannesburg.

After a year of preparation with robotics coach Helder Rosas de Oliveira, the two respective teams from CBC: St Gabriels and Infernos, entered the soccer category of the competition.

In this category, two teams each with two autonomous robots play a football soccer match, 10 minutes-a-side and the team scoring the most goals being the winner.

His team won two podium spots, with St Gabriels winning gold and Infernos taking bronze.

“Infernos and St Gabriels actually played against each other in earlier rounds,” said De Oliveira.

“But we couldn’t take silver and gold because Infernos was knocked out by our arch-enemies Robodogs from Parklands in Cape Town in the semi-finals.

“But St Gabriels managed to beat them 2-1 in the end.”

De Oliveira is now prepping his boys for the WRO finals in Gyor, Hungary, running from 7 to 10 November.

“The boys have been preparing for the Hungary trip for months; we want to make our country proud.”
