These crimes are high in the Moot

While gate motor theft is still an ongoing problem in the Moot, another crime appears to be rising in the area.

While gate motor theft remained an ongoing problem in the Moot, another crime has reared its head in the area – trespassing.

Kilnerpark Security spokesperson Ancelize van der Kooi said an escalation in the number of trespassing cases has been noticed.

“One of the major problems we are currently experiencing in the Moot is premises being trespassed by criminals.

“Community members see them, but the criminals get away very easily because they can easily jump over walls to escape,” she said.

“Then you also get the opportunist criminals who steal garden tools, drills, chairs and other valuables.”

She said criminals even tampered with vehicles at night, to check if they are open to steal other valuable items such as computers and wallets.

“Especially since these types of crimes are becoming a big problem for us now, we want to ask residents to make sure their properties and vehicles are well protected,” she said.

“It is also important to keep any visible and valuable items out of sight so as not to attract criminals.”

Van der Kooi said gate motor theft remained high in the Moot, especially in the Villieria and Pretoria Moot policing areas.

“We receive a lot of complaints every week, that gate motors are stolen,” she said.

Villieria police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits confirmed that they were also experiencing a rise in these crimes.

Brits encouraged residents to always report crimes.

“It is very important for residents to report crimes, no matter how small, at their nearest police station,” she said.

She said it was also important for residents to provide police with as much information as possible about the crime.

She encouraged residents to secure their belongings.
