Hercules police, security company help homeless

They assisted the homeless living at the Sinovich park, or better known as the Groendam, among others.

A security company along with the Hercules police recently took hands to help homeless living in the west of Pretoria.

They assisted the homeless living at the Sinovich park better known as the Groendam on Monday, said Gordon Visser of Cinto Guard security company.

“We started on Monday to hand out bread to the homeless staying in the park and continued on Tuesday,” he said.

He said they were able to hand out 150 loaves of bread.

“We also visited the homeless living under the Hendricks Street bridge, the Bremer Street informal settlers and the homeless living behind the post office to give them bread,” he said.

Visser said they were assisted by Hercules Spar, who donated 40 loaves of bread towards the project.

On Tuesday Visser said he wanted to expand the initiative.

“I’m going to go and buy bread and milk to hand out at the Randfontein informal settlement, which is across the street from the local cemetery,” he said.

He said he was not sure how many items they would buy, adding that “God would lead me to show me how much I should buy”.

“I can go in and buy R5 000 worth of bread and milk or I could spend R10 000,” he said.

“This project is in God’s hands and He will lead me to show me what to do.”

He said the project was aimed at helping people in need.

“This project is not about creating awareness about our security company – it is all about residents helping others,” he said.

“These people do not have many people to help them and they cannot do these things themselves because they have no income.”

Visser said that although they would have wanted to help the homeless in the area until the end of the lockdown period.

He added that he was not sure how far he would be able to help as funds were limited.

He said anyone who wanted to donate towards their project, was welcome to do so.

Local ward councillor, Elma Nel applauded the initiative.

“Still, they perform their daily duties and keep us safe,” she said.

“I know Hercules police acts against the people who contravene the disaster management act and yet this project does not conflict with their duties and they do everything as soon as their work is done.”

Nel also thanked Captain Riaan Groenewald from the police station.

“The project was his idea,” she said.
