Help wanted for disabled north girl

She was born with water on the brain (hydrocephaly). It is a condition where there is an abnormal build-up of CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) in the cavities (ventricles) of the brain.

A couple from the north of Pretoria has reached out to the community as they struggle to keep their heads above water with their disabled daughter at home during the current national lockdown.

Earlier this week the Breedt couple took to social media in an attempt to get help for their seven-year-old disabled daughter.

Angel’s mother, Martie Breedt, said since the lockdown kicked in, they were struggling to survive and stay afloat financially.

Angel was born on 19 December 2012 by an emergency caesarean section. She was born with water on the brain (hydrocephaly). It is a condition where there is an abnormal build-up of CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) in the cavities (ventricles) of the brain.

Breedt said she was six months pregnant with Angel when the doctors explained to them her baby did not have a normal brain and suggested an abortion.

She couldn’t get it over her heart and go through with the pregnancy.

“We decided to keep the baby girl whether she would be normal or not and that we will truly love her. When she was born she was perfect with 10 little fingers and 10 little toes. Everything was perfect until we found out with a shock she had a fairly larger head due to all the moisture in her brain.”

Angel is consequently blind and is unable to walk. She also suffers daily from epilepsy and is therefore dependent on her parents full-time.

Breedt said they have no income and rely on their Sassa allowance.

She believed her husband’s struggle to find a job is due to his age and health. He now makes wooden objects and does small jobs to keep the food on the table.

Because of this Angel’s parents reached out to the community to ask for help to get vegetables for her.

“Angel does not eat everything we eat, her taste is different from ours and she rejects everything she’s not used to.”

She also doesn’t like sweets or soft drinks.

Angel’s parents created a Facebook page, Gift from God Angel, for her to share photos and her daily experiences.
