Centurion business robbery leads to shootout
“No SAPS members were injured during the shooting.”
According to a CPF Lyttelton Sector 1 statement, ten suspects held a security officer at gunpoint at the Makro store in Highveld, Centurion.
The robbery took place at around 22:00.
“The suspects took the officer’s firearm and five rounds of ammunition,” the statement said.
“Suspects broke three windows to gain access to the store. The Lyttelton SAPS roving team responded to the robbery.”
It is alleged that shots were exchanged between the suspects and police officials.
“Property stolen and its value has not been confirmed yet,” the statement said.
“No SAPS members were injured during the shooting.
“An unmarked SAPS vehicle was damaged in the incident and has one bullet hole.”
Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed the incident.
“Police are searching for a gang of armed men following a robbery the Makro store,” he said.
“Police were alerted and responded to a business robbery in progress on Wednesday evening. As the police were approaching, the men started shooting and police returned fire.
“The suspects got away in different cars. None of the police officers were injured.”
Masondo said an investigation was still underway to determine what was taken from the store.
Police were appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in apprehending the suspects to please call the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
Information could also be given anonymously via MySAPS App.
Attempts to get comment from Makro were unsuccessful.
