Five new Covid-19 cases at Pretoria prison

The department confirmed on Tuesday that it had a total of seven positive cases at its Kgosi Mampuru prison.

The number of positive Covid-19 cases at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria has risen by five bringing the department’s total number of cases in Gauteng to eight.

This according to the department of correctional services, who confirmed it had a total of 138 positive cases within its structures across the country on Tuesday.

This total rose by nine with four officials from the Western Cape testing positive.

According to the department, the five new cases at Kgosi Mampuru were remand detainees.

“One of the officials who tested positive in the Western Cape passed on last night. An investigation by the health department is underway to determine the cause of death,” the department said in a statement.

“The department appreciates the good working relationship with the health department as more teams are on the ground, working hard to contain any further spread of the virus while giving the best care possible to those testing positive.”

“Mass screening and testing remains in force across all centres to identify hotspots and avert an unmanageable spread.”

The breakdown of total cases within jails per province was as follows:

Gauteng: eight (one official and seven inmates), Western Cape: 36 (35 officials and one inmate), Eastern Cape: 91 (35 officials, 56 inmates and one recovery), Limpopo: two officials and one recovery and Head Office: one official and one recovery.
