Two women arrested for illegal cigarette trade in the north

A total of R164 910 cash and cigarettes worth about R240 000 were confiscated.

Two women were arrested in Pretoria North on Saturday for illegally trading in cigarettes.

Pretoria north sectors one and two were on duty with crime prevention and Covid-19 compliance around the area when they received the tip-off.

“They received information about a black Honda station wagon delivering cigarettes around Pakistani shops in the area,” national police spokesperson, Brigadier Vish Naidoo said.

He said two members on duty spotted the vehicle in President Steyn Street, driving towards the east. They pulled the vehicle off the road to investigate.

“The vehicle was driven by two females wearing black scarfs on their faces. Upon searching the vehicle, police found eight boxes of 50 cartons of F1 Virginia blend cigarettes and a lot of money in the car.”

Naidoo said a total of R164 910 cash was confiscated and cigarettes worth about R240 000.

“The suspects are detained at the Pretoria North police station. The money and cigarettes were confiscated.”

The two women, believed to be from Centurion, were arrested for contravening the disaster management act.
