State Theatre and Brooklyn Theatre launches productions online

Due to the Covid-19 lockdown both theatres are looking at earning an income through online streaming of their productions.

The South African State Theatre and the Brooklyn Theatre recently announced that they will be offering their productions online during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The State Theatre will be streaming their productions on their YouTube channel, while the Brooklyn Theatre will launch their concerts on their website.

State Theatre artistic director Aubrey Sekhabi said this is one of the various plans and social-economic relief measures being rolled out by the theatre during these trying times.

“The streaming will comprise of past productions recorded live at State Theatre; once the lockdown restrictions allow, we will also look at adding new productions to the schedule.”

He said with the lockdown, they are presented with an opportunity to experiment with this format.

“Since 2014, we have been experimenting with bringing theatre online and on television,” he said.

“We are ready to launch, whilst providing relief for our artists to earn an income. We also intend to solidify the online platform as an alternative or secondary platform for our artistic offering.”

The theatre will be launching Africa month celebrations on 24 May with the streaming of never-seen-before performance by the multi-Grammy awards winning acapella group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, alongside the Guinness Record holder, Percy Maimela, Mamelodi-born Ncamisa Nqana and rounded off with Luthando Arts Academy’s Amawethu.

The launch bill includes Pretoria’s own Ncamisa Nqana who is a jazz composer and vocalist from Mamelodi, east of Pretoria.

The Brooklyn Theatre will launch their video-streaming website of concerts on 14 May 2020.

“All our loyal patrons of 26 years can now reach us and enjoy our concerts in their own homes on any tablet, computer, smartphone or TV.”

The theatre said the website will allow users to either subscribe for a fixed monthly cost or view all media or purchase a view for each media piece individually.

“No media will be downloadable to prevent theft. The media will be securely encrypted and stored. Website construction has been taken care of by a reputable company, so payments are safe.”

The South African State Theatre’s content will be loaded on their YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgyEcxGJaQ2376NJ_6aqH7A
