East woman celebrates century under lockdown
“She is characterised by her positive attitude and kindness, which has probably contributed to her blessed long and healthy years of life”

To turn 100-years-old is a big milestone in anyone’s life – and very few reach it.
It was also a big milestone for Silverton resident, Beb Ekema, who celebrated her birthday during the lockdown period.
“It was definitely a unique experience. We could not celebrate her birthday properly because we were not able to visit her,” said Ejkema’s friend, Helena du Preez (80).
They have been friends for more than 10 years.
“We could, however, see her at a distance. We left her gifts to collect it after we had left,” Du Preez said.
Even though they could not properly celebrate Ekema’s birthday, Du Preez paid tribute to her life and everything she has achieved.
Ekema was born on 23 May 1920, and currently lives at the Silverton retirement village.
“She is characterised by her positive attitude and kindness, which has probably contributed to her blessed long and healthy years of life,” she said.
“Beb is truly a remarkable woman and is still very independent. She lives alone and can drive a car if she wanted to and still participates in gym activities when she gets the chance.”

Du Preez said as a primary school teacher and through Ekema’s involvement with the church, her contribution to her community has always been very important to her.
“Preserving her keen sense of humour and active brain is certainly supported by her hobbies such as weekly card games (she is a keen Canasta player) and also enjoys sudoku, crossword puzzles and reading,” she said.
“Beb is and has always been a very positive and energetic person,” she said.
Ekema is a mother of three sons, the eldest of whom is now 76-years-old.
Du Preez said Ekema grew up in the Netherlands and moved to South Africa in 1951.
When asked how Ekema felt about turning a 100, she said she was excited to reach such a milestone.
“We trust she will be able to celebrate her 101st birthday with family and friends and that we will be able to properly celebrate her birthday after lockdown,” Du Preez said.
“Happy birthday Beb, it is an honour to be able to know you.”
