Dog poisonings on the rise in The Reeds, Centurion – local CPF

Last week five houses in Stead Avenue, The Reeds, were targeted when five dogs were poisoned.

A spate of dog poisonings in Centurion has led to warnings by the local CPF this week.

The warning comes after five houses in Stead Avenue, The Reeds, were victims of dog poisonings last Wednesday, according to Wierdabrug Sector 2 CPF spokesperson Mynhardt le Roux.

Le Roux said the residents at the houses only realised their dogs had been poisoned at around 06:00 in the morning after waking up.

“Five dogs in total were poisoned and only one survived after its owner managed to get it to a veterinarian,” Le Roux said.

“There is a worrying increase in poisonings in the area.”

Le Roux said the poisonings could be a precursor to more serious crimes such as house break-ins.

“In the past few days following the poisonings we did have two attempted house break-ins in the same area,” he said.

“We responded with security companies in the area but were not able to catch those responsible.”

Le Roux said the CPF would continue to patrol in the area as it was almost fully functional once again since the start of the lockdown.

The SPCA provides the following guidelines when it comes to dog poisonings:

– The most common type of poison used is Aldicarb, also known as two-step, a pesticide available as a black powder sold on the black market.
– Pet owners who suspected their dogs were killed by poison should be cautious and wear a plastic apron, gloves and mask when handling the carcass.
– If your dog shows symptoms of poisoning, immediately take it to the vet.
– Pet owners are advised to keep a list of clinics and vets open 24 hours a day.
– If you suspect your dog has been poisoned contact these facilities as soon as possible. Some poisons need lifesaving treatments that only a vet can give.
