Silverton Tshwane EMS station closed as staffer tests positive for Covid-19

The EMS department will continue to respond to all emergency incidents reported in the areas covered by the closed station from surrounding fire stations.

The City of Tshwane’s Emergency Services Department (EMS) Station 4 has been temporarily closed after a staff member tested positive for Covid-19.

Deputy chief public information and media liaison in the City of Tshwane EMS department, Charles Mabaso, said the member of staff went into isolation and undertook a test after members of his household tested positive.

“He informed management of his test results on the afternoon of 12 June. He was asymptomatic during regular screening and sanitisation conducted daily before entering the station as part of the Covid-19 prevention strategy.”

Mabaso said the staff member wore appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) daily.

He said the PPE stock availability was continuously monitored to ensure that frontline staff were always protected. The infected staff member was trained on correct utilisation of PPE and on the disease itself.

“The closure of the station is also an opportunity to allow the building and emergency response resources to be sanitised and deep cleaned further, as much as it is done consistently against the coronavirus risk.

“The rest of the staff working the same shift with the said member have all been placed in isolation and tested for Covid-19.”

Mabaso said all contacts would be traced and managed accordingly as per health department guidelines.

“The City has a comprehensive workplace Covid-19 management plan which is backed by expertly advised protocols and guidelines. We will continue to take all precautionary measures to protect our most important asset – our valuable staff as well as our residents – who look up to us for a diligent and professional service,” he said.
