Since the national lockdown regulations have been relaxed, a definite spike in crime has been reported in Centurion, especially regarding vehicle-related crimes.
Corporate communications officer for the Lyttelton police Captain David Miller said in the past two months a large number of vehicles have been stolen and broken into at shopping centres.
He said police have stepped up visible patrols around these areas.
“Unfortunately we cannot be everywhere all the time and as such we are requesting the community work together with us by not leaving valuables visible in vehicles.”

Lyttelton police issued the following safety tips regarding vehicle-related crimes:
– Please make sure that when locking your vehicle you physically pull on the door handle to make sure it is locked. “We know that a great number of thefts out of motor vehicles occur by suspects using remote jamming devices.”
– Be vigilant and always be aware of who is around you and if someone is watching you.
– Get into the habit of putting valuables in your boot at the beginning of your journey.
– Remember your vehicle’s number plate. “If it is stolen, we are able to give a proper look-out to our members as well as our CPF members and security companies.”
– Report any suspicious activity to your local police station or calling police emergency number 10111. Make sure you get a reference number for your complaint.
