North woman’s body discovered week after dying

It is believed the victim was a hoarder and sometimes slept in her car because there was no room in the apartment.

Emergency personnel and police were called to an apartment in Sinoville where a woman’s body was discovered a week after she had died. On 6 July, volunteers from the SBBV (Sinoville Firefighting Association) were called to an apartment block in Sinoville after neighbours reported a horrible smell emanating from the apartment.

SBBV chairman Johan Botha described the incident as tragic and said it was the first time they had to deal with an incident like this.

Volunteers struggled to get into the apartment because it was packed to the rafters. It is believed the victim was a hoarder and sometimes slept in her car because there was no room in the apartment.

The woman’s decomposed body was found on the top floor and it took six volunteers to remove the overweight victim.

“The neighbours said they had not seen her for a few days and even tried to call her, but her phone was off.”

“Initially, they did not suspect anything amiss, because her phone battery was frequently flat,” said another SBBV board member, Zenobia Loocke-du Plessis.

The victim’s closest family member is a brother in the Free State. Loocke-du Plessis urged the community to look after each other during the current national lockdown.

“Go and see if the neighbour is okay, check-in, ask if they have food. Today people are too scared to get involved with others,” she said.

Relatives, who did not want to be identified, said they were devastated by the news of her passing.

“We will remember her music and books knowledge, her nice nature and friendship. All the caring and love. How could one ever forget?”

The SBBV are urging the community to join their organisation as volunteers. For more information call 072-702-8830.
