Sundowns’ young coach makes a welcome return

Mokwena is no stranger to the yellow nation and is well aware that the support and love shown by the supporters is a big driving factor in what drives the team to always do better.

Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the return of their assistant coach Rulani Mokwena.

Mokwena left his post in 2017, to join Orlando Pirates where he was assistant manager to Milutin Sredojevi before he was appointed interim coach in 2019.

A poor run of results saw the young coach demoted to his previous coaching role while German coach Josef Zinnbauer took over the reins.

In March 2020, Mokwena was appointed coach of Chippa United however his time at the club was interrupted by Covid-19.

In July, Sundowns announced that the “prodigal” son would rejoin the club.

“My first session was fantastic. I received a warm welcome from everyone, the coaches, staff and players welcomed me very well,” Mokwena said.

“The training session was very well organised, the players gave me the same respect that I had before I left. Seeing the familiar faces like Hlompho, Denis, Themba, Kennedy is always exciting.”

After being away from the team for three years, Sundowns managed success, winning the Absa Premiership twice and the Telkom Knockout.

“I’ve come back to a familiar environment with familiar faces, an environment that has kept its ethos of professionalism, hard work, success and the drive to want to be the most competitive and the most successful club on the continent.”

With Sundowns being one of the more busy teams in Africa, Mokwena has had to hit the ground running.

From joining the camp as soon as possible he has already adopted the dreams and goals the team wants to achieve.

“They say teamwork makes the dream work. Here at Sundowns, the dream is known by many and is led by the ambition of the president (Dr Patrice Motsepe) and his support in us and saying that he wants the club to be the best, not just in South Africa, but on the African continent.

“The dream is driven by the appetite and relentless pursuit of success that coach Pitso possesses and his pursuit for excellence is what pushes the dream.”

Mokwena is no stranger to the yellow nation and is well aware that the support and love shown by the supporters is a big driving factor in what drives the team to always do better.

“This dream wouldn’t be anything without the loyal supporters who dream the same dream, who speak this same language of wanting to support a club that wants to be the best club on the African continent.”
