Local youth centre receives solar panels
The donation will benefit over 240 students and 17 staff members.
A youth centre in Gomorrah informal settlement recently received solar panels and other equipment.
Malusi youth development organisation received renewable energy equipment ranging from solar panels, thermometers, batteries, power regulators, lights, electric sockets, and solar cables.
Corporate social investment specialist at the organisation Unathi Mbanya told Rekord these were among some of the materials donated by Coca Cola Beverages SA in celebration of Mandela month.
Mbanya said it was a joyous occasion as members of MYDO welcomed the donation which brought much welcome relief for the centre.

Founder and executive director of MYDO Hlakudi Malatji said the organisation did not have electricity.
“As you can see our area is underdeveloped and electricity is a luxury, yet a huge need, considering the kind of youth development programmes and activities we offer.
“We have to charge our devices from people for a fee and you can imagine the inconvenience that comes with that. Alternatively, we would use a generator and without resources that becomes a huge challenge for us,” said Malatji.
Malatji said Covid-19 necessitated the need for online learning hence they felt the donations came at a perfect time.

“It was very hard for our staff to effectively do their work without power and our students would also struggle to operate their devices to do their school work,” he said.
According to Malatji, the donation would benefit more than 240 students and 17 staff members. “Students will be able to do their evening studies at the centre because lights will no longer be an issue anymore.
“On behalf of MYDO and all beneficiaries we are thankful for this gesture. This is not just a donation to us but a life-changing gift that will definitely enhance efficiency and effectiveness in the work that we do.”
