Celebrating Women’s Day cleaning Hennops

Centurion’s water warriors prepare for the upcoming rain season by preparing and cleaning the river banks.

Centurion’s water warriors celebrated this year’s Women’s Day getting their hands dirty by cleaning another section of the Hennops River.

On 10 August Tarryn Johnston, founder of Hennops Revival, and her team met up at the Southdowns Irene Dairy Farm where the team of volunteers cleaned a portion of the river flowing through the farm.

The group made up of somewhat 50 volunteers were all sanitized, screened and equipped on the day and bagged approximately 9 tonnes of waste in 457 bags collected on the day.

“Day one of the Hennops River clean-up at the Southdowns/Irene Dairy Farm – what an amazing day. We had so many dedicated helping hands today,” Johnston said.

“So much gratitude to Dave, Nicole, Lisa and Giles for initiating this clean-up, the volunteers and the lunch And putting that Landi to such hard work! To Adrian for accommodating us in the space and for allowing us to store our gear overnight”

The crew will spend approximately three days cleaning at the Irene Dairy farm in preparation for the upcoming rainy season.

“The rain is less than 60 days away, we need to prepare as much as possible.”

Johnston also thanked the tree-feller crew who also assisted on the day by cutting up branches along the river bank.

“We realize how important it is to work together on projects like these. What we did was to remove the branches for when the water levels rise so that less litter to collect or get stuck on it.”

She thanked Pretty for managing the desk and keeping everything clean and Covid-19 screening.

“Thank you to all the community volunteers from Southdowns and Irene for joining in and getting your hands dirty.”

Johnston said the focus was now to prepare for the upcoming rain season and has invited the community to come up with concepts to help assist the organisation in preparation.
