Young horse riders highlight women abuse issues

The peaceful demonstration “Ride against gender-based violence awareness campaign” was organized by riders from the Invincible U-turn Ranch on Women’s Day.

Mamelodi traffic came to a standstill this week after a group of horse riders took to the streets in “protest” against women and children abuse.

The peaceful demonstration was organised by riders from the Invincible U-turn Ranch.

The initiative “Ride against gender-based violence awareness campaign” was held this past Women’s Day.

Peter Selolo from Invincible U-turn Ranch said the demonstration started at Mams mall in Mamelodi East and moved across to Denlyn mall in Mamelodi West.

He said the event was organised by five young riders.

“The young riders took to the street and handing out pamphlets with messages against women and children abuse.”

Eleven riders were accompanied by the VW Polo Club in Mamelodi and police.

Selolo said that the awareness campaign was the first of its kind and they were planning to host it annually.

“Our first stop was at Denlyn mall where we handed out pamphlets to give to their loved ones at home,” said Selolo.

He said the awareness campaign was in conjunction with the annual mass horse ride against women, children and drug abuse campaign also organised by the Invincible U-turn Ranch.

Selolo said the mass event, which was cancelled due to Covid-19 pandemic, was aimed at collecting food parcels and sanitary pads for disadvantaged families and for schoolgirls.

Invincible U-turn Ranch riders also encouraged the youth to start doing something about their lives and to stay away from drugs and substance abuse and participate in different sports.

Rochelle Leso said: “We rode for all our sisters, mothers and children whose lives were cut short by a man’s hands.

“We rode against femicide, gender-based violence, and the injustices that women face every day simply because we are women.”
