Volunteers thanked for cleaning scene after mielie truck overturns

The 15-ton truck overturned and lost it’s cargo of corn of mielies on the corner of Lavender Avenue and Steve Biko Street yesterday.

Sinoville fire fighting association (SFFA) volunteers worked until sunset on Thursday evening, to clear up Lavender Road and Steve Biko Street after a truck overturned and spilled a cargo of mielies.

Emergency personnel rushed to the scene around 14:00 on Thursday. The 15-ton truck overturned and lost its cargo of mielies over the mountain pass towards Sinoville around 13:55.

“I would like to thank every member who was involved in the three fires (that had broken out) and the truck that overturned on Thursday,” Johan Botha, chairman of the association said.

Botha said he received many calls from the community thanking the fire fighting association for the volunteers’ services.

“We could stand our man at all the scenes without the fire brigade’s presence,” he said.

Roy Rademeyer of Exec Ops Protection said trucks of up to 5 tons were prohibited from driving over the pass from Steve Biko Street towards Sinoville.

Exec Ops Security, SFFA, Sinoville police and the local CPF and volunteers responded to the overturned vehicle and assisted in directing the traffic flow and cleaning up the scene.

“The whole road was covered in mielies, everywhere you looked,” Rademeyer told Rekord, adding that no-one was seriously injured and that the window of the truck had to be broken to free the driver.

“Fortunately the driver only sustained minor injuries.”

Rademeyer said roads towards the Wonderboom Junction were temporary closed or traffic redirected as volunteers cleared the road.
