Pipes, cables and ‘cracked roads’ cause problems in the west

“We have a programme to replace old and ageing pipelines.”

Water leaks, cracked roads and electrical failures are of the issues plaguing Pretoria west residents.

However, the Tshwane metro has said it was aware of these issues and was attending to a number of them.

“We are assisting those that have reference numbers as per our service delivery plan,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

“We have a programme to replace old and ageing pipelines,” said Mashigo.

Local ward councillor Elma Nel said the pipelines in her area were over 100 years old.

“If the metro can replace the old pipeline system with a new modern one, they can reduce the chances of future leaks.”

Nel also said roads in Daspoort were in such a bad state, motorists had to be extra careful.

“They should be very careful when driving, especially when it rains,” she said.

“The roads are cracked, potholes form and the metro do not fix them.”

However, Mashigo said the repair of the roads was in progress.

“We are currently experiencing a huge backlog when it comes to pothole complaints.”

When it came to power cuts, Nel said residents were constantly finding themselves in the dark.

The metro attributed the cuts to damaged cables, accidents, thefts, overload, bad weather, thunderstorms and illegal connections.

“Residents with complaints are advised to visit the metro walk-in centre or call the customer care line (012-358-9999),” said Mashigo.
