A plea for answers in peacock shooting

A four-year-old peacock called Whitney was shot and killed in Faerie Glen and its owner wants to know who did it.

The owner of a peacock that was killed is saddened by the cruel shooting of his pet and has asked the community for help.

On Wednesday, Jaque du Plessis woke up to news that his four-year-old peacock named Whitney was shot and killed just a few houses away from his home in Fearie Glen on Vista Drive.

Du Plessis said the bird was found with a wound that made them believe a gas gun was used.

“I do not know who would want to hurt an animal,” he said.

“Everyone in our street knows it and I did not receive any complaints about it.“I just want to know who killed it.”

The bird was used to sleeping in a neighbour’s tree in the same street and Du Plessis said the neighbour loved the bird.

He suspects that the bird might have been killed by someone who was unhappy about its recent hooting which lasts for a short period during the breeding season.

“It’s only for a short period that it makes noise and I have an open door policy; anyone who is bothered by the animal can call me or send me message, and I will collect it,” he said.

“In the past neighbours who felt bothered would send me a message in the community WhatsApp group and I would fetch it.” He said the killing of his pet peacock amounted to animal cruelty, but he has not reported the matter to any authorities.

Footage seen by Rekord, shows the bird on a tree in the evening while someone with a torch illuminates the bird and an accomplice chases it.

“I would just like to know who they are and I would like to talk to them.”

He along with the owner of Rock@88 as well Coskey’s driving school have offered a reward of R3 000 to anyone with information that could lead to the people who killed the bird.

“It had beautiful feathers and it saddens me that it died the way it did.”

Anyone with information can contact Jaque on 060-526-8815 or Rowan on 082-609-0141.
