Trio caught with stolen cellphone tower batteries in Centurion

One of the suspects was apprehended close to the vehicle, while the other two were arrested a short while later.

Three men were arrested for the possession of cellphone tower batteries in Centurion on Monday afternoon.

“Around 12:00, members of security services started chasing a Toyota bakkie that was used to steal cellphone tower batteries around Kempton Park area,” said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

He said that other security companies together with the police were able to zone in on the vehicle and “tactically” stopped it.

“All of the suspects jumped out and ran in different directions.

One of the suspects was apprehended close to the vehicle, while the other two were arrested a short while later, not too far from the scene,” Miller said.

He said that a large amount of cellphone batteries were recovered in the vehicle, together with false number plates and tools used to steal the batteries.

“The management of Lyttelton police would like to thank all of the companies and individuals who were involved in this successful operation.

We would also like to thank the private chopper from the security industry for assisting in the search for these suspects.”

Miller said the trio were expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court within 48 hours on charges related to the possession of suspected stolen property, tampering with essential infrastructure and possession of house-breaking implements.
