Beauty queen in Centurion is second princess in world competition

“When I won the national competition I couldn’t gather my thoughts regarding the opportunities that were ahead of me, nothing felt real until I stepped foot on that plane and realized just how amazing this all is.”

A matriculant from Centurion came second in the Miss Teen World competition which was held in Guayaquil Ecuador in South America, recently.

Megan Leigh van der Walt (18) is currently in matric and home-schooled. She entered the Miss Teen World South Africa competition earlier this year and won.

According to mother Dalene, World South Africa Pageants Director Kaylan Hamel sent Megan to compete in the Miss Teen World competition.

“She placed 2nd runner up and was crowned alongside Miss Columbia, who won, and the 1st runner up, Miss Paraguay.

“Megan did not go alone, I accompanied her to the competition and ensured that she was back in SA in time for her first English matric paper.”

She said the competition was a beautiful combination of experiences and opportunities.

“The director, Rodrigo Moreira, was extremely welcoming and kind and always made sure we had what we needed. A member of Rodrigos team, Fernando, was always there to lend a helping hand with anything from fixing a broken shoe to the simplest Spanish-English translation.”

Megan said they had also been taken to explore the beautiful cities of Ecuador, such as Samborondón and Guayaquil.

“We were taken to the most beautiful restaurants of which one had live music, another was on a boat and my favourite, which was built on the same grounds as where a war took place in Ecuador.”

She said she was introduced to the most amazing girls that made for the best hellos and the hardest goodbyes, and that they became instant family.

“When I won the national competition I couldn’t gather my thoughts regarding the opportunities that were ahead of me, nothing felt real until I stepped foot on that plane and realised just how amazing this all is.

“Placing 2nd Princess at Miss Teen World was such a blessing. I was in no way upset about not winning as I had seen the competition as an experience and a lesson more than anything else, and I am so proud of the girls that placed above me.”

She said her school, Impaq, was extremely supportive regarding the competition and the travelling required for the competition.

“I am a huge animal lover and love this planet more than I can explain, I strive to protect our beautiful planet every day by making eco-friendly choices. I hope one day I will be able to not only live an environmentally conscious lifestyle myself, but inspire others to take care of our beautiful planet as well.”
