Fire at Pretoria building disrupts matric exams

Officials from the school and the Department of Education had to arrange for an alternate venue for the learners to write their exams.

A fire broke out at a building where matriculants were supposed to write exams on Monday morning.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said they received a call at around 08:00 informing them of the fire at the building on Madiba and Thabo Sehume streets.

“Firefighters arrived on scene to find that an office on the third floor was on fire. They managed to contain and extinguish the fire,” he said.

Mabaso said Tshwane City College matrics were supposed to write their exams on the sixth floor, but they couldn’t because of the smoke.

“Officials from the school and the Department of Education met to arrange for an alternate venue for the learners to write their exams,” he said.

“A man in his 40s was treated for smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital.”

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
