36 road defects await repair teams in Ward 82
New equipment and risk-based patching aim to tackle municipal maintenance backlogs across Pretoria communities.
More than 30 reported road defects in Ward 82 await attention from municipal maintenance teams, with several Pretoria East routes remaining without scheduled repair dates.
City of Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the municipality had received 115 pothole-related service requests in the ward – which includes Ashley Gardens, Maroelana, Alphen Park, Menlo Park and Hazelwood – during the current financial year, which began in July.
Repairs had been completed for 85 requests. Of these, 49 had been closed on the city’s system, while 36 were awaiting administrative closure.
However, two pothole-related service requests were logged for the streets during the current financial year, with one resolved and the other still outstanding.
A repair date for the outstanding request has not been confirmed.
“The city reviews and prioritises service requests daily,” Mashigo said.
He added that outstanding repairs were also incorporated into integrated service delivery operations in identified wards, allowing the municipality to address several service needs in the same area.
Mashigo said escalated requests remained subject to prioritisation based on identified safety risks and operational requirements. Escalating a complaint did not necessarily result in immediate repairs.
Residents can follow up through the city’s call centre or other official communication channels by quoting their service request reference numbers.
Risk assessment directs patching schedules
According to Mashigo, road user safety guides the city’s approach to prioritising pothole repairs. Reported and identified hazardous road conditions are assessed according to the risks they pose, with repair schedules informed by these risks and operational requirements.
The metro has also purchased two Jetpatcher machines and trained 26 municipal officials to operate them, as part of efforts to improve its pothole repair capacity.
Mashigo said the machines were shared across Tshwane’s seven regions and deployed according to operational requirements and service delivery priorities.
A specific improvement in pothole repair response times for Ward 82 could not yet be confirmed, he said.
