Brother narrowly escapes house fire

A Nellmapius family lost everything they owned in the fire. A younger brother was trapped inside the house when the fire started and suffered serious injuries.

A family from Nellmapius extension 4 lost everything they owned in a fire on Sunday.

Dimakatso Rasehashi (37) said the fire nearly took her younger brother’s life who was trapped inside the house when the fire started.

“My brother was alone in the house when we came to visit on Sunday morning and my brother refused to open for us and we decided to leave since he has decided to lock himself inside the house,” said Dimakatso.

“On our way to the taxi rank, we received calls from neighbours informing us about our parent’s house on fire and that our brother was trapped inside,” said Dimakatso.

Her brother suffered serious injuries on both his hands and face and was immediately taken to hospital after he was rescued by neighbours who broke down the door.

“My brother is lucky to be alive. If it weren’t for the neighbours’ help, he could have lost his life in the fire,” said Dimakatso.

She added nobody knows what caused the fire because there was electricity on the day.

The Rasehashi family lost everything they owned in the fire and only have the clothes that they were wearing.

Dimakatso added that no one is working in her family and they were all surviving on temporary jobs and social grant money.

The family pleaded with the public to help with any donations from clothes to food.

They also desperately need help to rebuild their parents’ house. The house will need doors, windows, paints, old furniture and rewiring since the electricity cables were all damaged when the house caught fire.

She added that they have small children who also need clothes and school uniforms for a 14-year-old girl, 11- and 5-year-old boys.

Ward 24 councillor Joyce Seelane visited the family after she heard about the disaster. She said they helped clean the house with other councillors and already started making arrangements to help the family with clothes and food.

Seelane said she can confirm that the social development has agreed to help the family and we are pleading with everyone out there to please assist the family with anything they can.

They can also assist with building materials to help rebuild the house. Anyone who wishes to help the family can contact Dimakatso on 072 267 3775.
